I have a 2009 450 xc pretty stock. Just have ranchero carb, Akro full exhaust, and fci intake. This past weekend I find it hard to go into 4 th gear when riding. I have to slow down and keep trying. When the bike is turned off, should you be able to shift from 1 St to 5 th gear with the clutch no problem?? Bc with my bike I have to move the bike a bit to get each gear to go in normally.

What do you suggest I do. It doesn't always happen but this weekend it happened 6-7 times I couldn't put 4 th or fifth gear on high rpm.

Thanks alot for any help.

that is normal to have to rock the bike to go threw each gear with the bike off. Have you checked for any metal in your oil drain plug or screens?

OK, guys, I really appreciate the help. Here is the complete details:

I felt the hard shifting to 4th and 5th gear on Saturday and that oil which was semi synthetic 10w40 was only about 10 hours old. On Sunday I decided to put MOTOREX 10w50 full synthetic as instructed by the manual. I didn't find any metals or anything abnormal in my oil. I Changed all my filters and went riding.

I still felt it. What it does is I start on first run it to high rpm, change to second and run it to high rpm, same for third and when I have to go to 4th, its as if im in 5th gear and have no more gears. I pull the clutch all the way to see if it will help and its still hard as if there is no more gears left. I slow down and try again and it works fine.

It doesn't do it all the time. There is NO ABNORMAL SOUND OR NOISE at all either when shifting or riding.

dj racing - if it is the roller and shifting star, is that a complicated job or work? Please guide me. Thanks. Also is the antihopping clutch worth it?

don't waste 1000$ on a antihopping clutch. it wont solve this problem.

its something related to your shifting mechanism . . . gotta check it out.

How often do you shift without using the clutch??

very simple job IF that is what it is. It is held on with one bolt for the star & 1 bolt for the roller. If I remember correctly you do have to pull the clutch off to change it though. If you tip the bike on its side you can pull the cover off & it will be in the lower left corner. look at all 7 spots were the roller sits & check the roller to see how much it wobbles. If it worn down only on the bottom half like the roller is only riding on the bottom, then replacing them should fix your problem. Good luck

First make very certain there is not anything impeding the lever movment, have seen many guys take the right side apart when their lever was bent and hitting the case OR hitting the chain! Chain lifts slightly off the sprocket at high speed making the OD of the chain run larger, if your running a 15t the chain can contact the lever on upshift!!!! Examine the top of the lever for scars! If its not there;
Your going to have to remove the clutch as Dave in the post above is talking about;
There is a shiny aluminum star wheel, make certain the bolt the hold it on is not loose, if it is or you take it off be very carfule to put it back on correctly! The flats cut on the back side are not symetrical, pay attention
Next item, same part, has about 6 steel pins in it, one of them may be loose or fallen out, Replace if any are loose
Next, the shift shaft that comes thru from the other side has an arm welded to it that has a sliding piece, a pin, two springs etc and engages the pins in the star wheel. There is a peg in the center of that arm which is rivoted in and the rivot comes loose. I have a bin full of those for the bikes that I have had tig welded so as they come thru I can swap out the part
