obviously no news is bad news for me at least...
arrived at the dyno on tursday around 2:30pm CST, it was unloaded and strapped down by 3pm...
everything looking we go ahead and get a baseline. well something obviously wasn't right. the two baseline runs showed the AF above 20 (off the chart) for the entire run. The dyno operator insisted that there was a air leak between the carb & head or the carb had issues. so the quad comes off the dyno and i take it home. on the way home i stopped at two different shops and bought all the main jets and pilots jets i could find. note that the initial jetting was 185mj, 45pj and jd red needle clipped 5th from top.
tuesday night i tear the carb completely apart to see if i can figure this out. after getting in the carb, everything was perfect. i talked to mike @ moto headz racing numerous times and his suggestion was to go higher on the mj & pj to see what happens. so tuesday night i put everything back together and load it up on the trailer. i changed the jetting to 205mj, 48pj, and jd blue needle clipped 5th from top.
i get up early wednesday morning and take it back to the dyno. please note that the dyno is nearly 45 minute each way and that doesnt include traffic which dallas/ft. worth is notorious for... i arrived around 9:30am. the quad is loaded up on the dyno by 10am. the first two runs still show the AF at 19ish for the entire run. the dyno operator cleaned the sniffer filters and replaced the copper just to make sure. two more runs and the same exact thing.
now with my dyno time ticking away, i decided to go to a 215mj & 50pj staying with the same needle and clip position (jd blue clip 5th from top). we ran it again 4 runs and all were the same, the AF now down to mid 18ish for all of them, still very lean, especially at the top making no power at all. by now i have talked to mike @ moto headz racing about 10 times and i had a call into james dean @ jd jetting for some advice.
one last attempt was made at the jetting. i changed to a 225mj & 48pj staying with the same needle and clip position (jd blue clip 5th from top). this time on the dyno the AF came down to the high 17's for the entire run. by this time i was very frustrated and sick of wasting money on the dyno. i pulled it back off the dyno and headed home. the dyno operator's suggestion was to change the main air jet in the front of the carb.
finally i received a call back from james dean @ jd jetting. he disagreed with the dyno operator's suggestions of changing the main air jet. James suggestion was not to change the needle. that his needle diameter was too big which wasnt allowing enough fuel at WOT. he gavce me a few needles to look for in town. after extensive calling around no one in Dallas/Ft. Worth (the 5th largest metroploitan area in US, ) had any needles. none, zip, zero, zilch; which was very hard for me to believe.
i went ahead and put the OBEKR needle back in the qith the clip in the 5th from the top. He also suggested that i use the 225mj & 45pj with that needle. he told me to try that combo this weekend and call him on monday. i packed everything up wednesday evening and we left early thursday morning.
here is where the fun starts... at about 6pm CST thursday evening i decided to take it for a quick 30 minutes dusk ride. it fires right up and seems fine. after riding for about 5 minutes i notice it is still has no power top or bottomm but this time i think it is very rich. so i continue to ride for a bit and all of a sudden i loose power. no spark? everything still works, it cranks over, but it wont start. in a bit of a rish before i left, i neglected to take my phone, wallet or anything...
so i think that i am maybe 4-5 miles away from the cabin and i will just push it back... i start pushing and pushing for like an hour. i walked forever it seemed. by this time it is pitch black out, very dark. thank goodness my head & tail light still worked. i flagged down this guy who turned out to be a forrest ranger on the way home. i pushed it off the road in th bushes and he gave me a ride back to the cabin. i hooked the trailer back up quickly and drove back to pick it up. only to figure out that the quad was 8.1 miles away from the cabin and i broke down at about 10.5 miles away and pushed it 2.4...
back to the ktm, i first thought that it was so rich that i fouled the plug out. well when i go back and changed the plug it still had no spark. after talking to a friend who had similair issues i am leaning toward the cdi being the culprit....
so needless to say this weekend just about sucked...
also attached is a pic of it on the dyno just before the first run.
