Black Smoke= Fuel
White Smoke= Coolant
Blue Smoke= Oil
If by down hill in low gear means you are using the engine as a brake, you could be sucking oil past the rings. It creates a Vaccum in the cylinder. It has to get air somewhere so it sucks it from the crankcase. That may be what it is.

My bike was blowing blue smoke to, come to find out i was leaving to much oil on my foam filter and it was getting sucked through my carb and right out the pipe so i just lightened up on the filter oil and pulled my carb out and cleaned it and problem solved!!

I here WAY more bad about these ktm engines than good. Here about a lot of broken frames to.

So far I have heard nothing but good things for these engines. This is from guys that have used them for years in side cars.

Show me a broken frame. I would like to see where it broke so it does not happen to me.

Ditto for me...let's see or hear about the broke frames?...I haven't heard a thing...of course the broke frame could have come from a high speed wipe out also...I hear a lot of good about these engines even BB Builds some have 200 hrs+ and still going that's as good as any Jap bike that i know of....

I get tired of hearing complaints about the reliability of a high-performance four-stroke motor. These things aren't lawn mowers! Maintenance issues are the number one problem with motor failures. Motocross guys never complain about warrantees (they don't come with them), or having to work on their bikes...just part of the deal. If you want reliability, might try raptor 250. lol

hey, I love my 5252! The sand was from the guy I bought it from. I was worried when the oil dirty and the air filter was dry. I am not complaining, it has been awesome!

the reason mine got effed up was also, unfortunately, a lack of maintenance, we kinda forgot about the whole being dynoed thing

its funny that you bring up lawnmowers.

even in the power equipment field, about 90% of major $$ repairs are due to lack of maint/abuse.

i have had customers come in b^tching up a storm, saying they will never buy that brand again, an never going to buy from my company again...

well, when it comes down to it, and they calm down, and then we explain to them that the unit has 1000 hours on it, original hydro fluid that was supposed to be changed @first 100 hrs, then again at 500.... and that the control shocks are bad, and that they customer said last time it was in they would replace them, but didnt.... and the oil in the engine is like tar, and about a quart low.... normally about that time they calm down a lil.

i cant honestly say that i have ever gone over 10 hours without changing the oil in any of my bikes/quads that i have had, i used to change every ride weekend, which i know is excessive, but i do plan on gettin an hourmeter on its way here soon.

and looking back, between july 2000 and 2001 season, i only put 440 miles on my last brand new bike, and then have about 40 hrs on my 400ex, only about 10-15 of which was done after building the hell outta it.

what can i say, i only trail ride, and figure 3-5 weekends a summer, then it snows... about 3-6 hours a weekend, average ride being about 50 miles... longest ride i have ever gone on was on my wr... hillman, got lost, was following someone, then got caught in cross traffic, spend hours and an entire wr (big) tank full of half wfo throttle, got back on track and reached buds cabin about 7-10 minutes after hitting reserve... that was close, about 80 miles that was.

i would check the oil first, if its above the top on glass when hot it is too much and will blow it into the carb.^
