    Baldwin motor work

whats your guys input on baldwins motor work? I have a stock 450sx motor that im looking to get beefed up for the start of the new race year I live fairly close to baldwin thats why im considering him. I dont want to have to touch the motor just drop it off somewhere and have the work done then put it back in the quad. If theres anybody else you guys would recommend let me know with some info of the places

swartfagers head with bills pipe, vortex ignition, stock cams will put out 60hp on a stock piston (it's not stock compression because he decks the head to get the proper sized burn chamber and up the compression). I have a fully built baldwin motor that doesn't come close to my swartfager motor. I also ran swartfagers motor all year last year with ZERO issues. If you don't want to do the work yourself you can drop the motor off with me and i'll send the head to dustin and do the work for you, I live in danville ohio 43014 and I go to ramjam and nemx to practice so we could make arrangements if you don't want to drive to danville. I've done allot of top ends for these sx's and have never had any problems.

i have back-to-back flow bench test verified a swartfagers head, and a baldwin head.

The baldwin head flowed better than the dsi head..

    good luck with your build.

Flow numbers are useful but don't translate directly into power... I've ran both baldwin and swartfager on the same setup and the swartfager motor without a doubt has more power across the rpm range. Your free to do what you like but I ridden 2 different baldwin built 450sx (that weren't mine) and owned 2 different baldwin motors and none of them came close to my swartfager built motor. I have a baldwin ported head I'd like to get rid of, if you want me to i'll install it on your motor and you give me your stock head as a core so i can get another head ported by swartfager...lol. I'll send you my number in a PM.... you can come ride my quads and you can decide, I also have a pro quad performance built quad that runs really well.

I should note that I'm not an expert when it comes to flow benches and numbers and don't understand them as well as a reputable engine builder like DRG or Baldwin does but I do know that my pro YFZ head I got my mike brown didn't flow as well as a stock yfz head but when installed on the same setup as the stock head made ALLOT more power. My buddy experienced the same thing with his can am motor and apparently the ktm motors have experienced this as well.

I was just asking about this and there's a local guy that's nationally know for his dragster motors that tried to explain it to me and I didn't fully understand but he said "basically there are allot of factors that come into play, and having the proper tune = power" he named off a bunch of different variables that go in to consider the proper tune (velocity, tract length, stroke, bore, lift, duration, port, flow....ect). He emphasized that having too much or little of those variables can hurt power output.

Decked head and race gas can get you there, with a good port job. Stock compression and 91octain not so much.My engine put down 55whp 37wtq on pump gas. This was after 3 20 min heat cycles. Im sure once broken in and Vortex on top I can gain a few more. Well see...
