There was a 300sx atv at the last round i raced at the weekend. Only got to see it do one lap though as the brakes locked up on it. Meant to take some pics of it but never got round to. Looked good though. Said they were having problems with vibrations.

I would ride this thing in a second. I want to buy old faithful, a 1988-89 Honda 250R ATV at some point just to have a cool 2 stroke quad. I just always thought they were cool and love 2 strokes. For right now, when I want my 2 stroke fix I ride my wife's Blaster 200 It rips when she rides it at 5'3" and 100 lbs......... when I get on it, it reminds me why I like my 4 stroke 450 so much more!

I have yet to see a CR500 quad conversion that was rideable. All that power is great in a heavy (compared to a 2 wheeler) Atv, but the Cr500 is such a bad vibrating, hand putting to sleep, frame breaking beast that they're unrideable in an atv. But if someone could conquer that problem I'll be the next in line.

    I can't remember, is the 380 counterbalanced?

I'm slowly collecting parts to totally rebuild an 88 250r right now, I've got a pile of parts to make it into an XC quad. I hope to have it together next year.

vibration is the big killer, A buddy of mine did a 500 R build, we actually "soft mounted" the engine in the end to get the vibs down to a level thats was tolerable....... he gave up on it and went with a 330R, far better machine........

If you look at a banshee the engine is mounted in rubber bushing at the mountings, we did the same on the 500 setup, it helped allot.

The problem it seems with quads is the front end (a arms etc) act like a big tuning fork amplifying the engines vibrations, where as on a two wheeler the front forks soak up a lot of the vibe ,(and there is no mass hanging outwards to amplify the engine vibe) so engines that seems fine vib wise in a two wheeler are damn near unrideable in a quad chassis !

Factor in a rubber bushed mounting setup all round, including the rear swinger bolt (oversize the cases and insert a rubber bushing sleeve there also) and it might be tolerable..............

certainly that 380 sounds and looks good in there

You can modify a cr500 topend to fit the counterbalanced 250r atv motor. There are also aftermarket cylinders in the 500cc range as well.

"...the Cr500 is such a bad vibrating, hand putting to sleep, frame breaking beast..."

every cr500 converted quad i've seen is just as big orange said. short lived!! at first they are a kick to ride, but the nasty vibes start getting to you in short order. unlike other bike engine into quad swaps though, the rest of the quad falls apart (more like vibrated apart). before honda made the 450r, i saw a few crf powered 250r based machines. very cool, but the tranny's dont hold up to the extra weight and extra traction.

i wonder if the 380 tranny is heavy enough to be reliable. i bet its not giving up to much in power to a 450xc though.

ive started a thread about doing the conversion on www.cr500riders.com and had a response from a guy in austraila that already has it all figured out,im just waiting for him to send me pics of the mounts and specs for the pipe ,CR500 Riders - Login ,you can get rid of alot of the vibration from getting the crank balanced by surf and turf racing, and not running a head mount..
